What is Colchicine?
Colchicine is a medication you can take to treat your gout symptoms during a gout attack. You’ll normally use Colchicine tablets if you can’t take over the counter painkillers like ibuprofen, or if these painkillers aren’t enough to help you deal with your symptoms. You can take Colchicine regularly to help avoid gout attacks, or you can take it as soon as you get a gout attack to help treat your symptoms.
How do Colchicine tablets work?
Gout happens when there’s a build-up of uric acid in the blood. If your levels of uric acid get too high, tiny grit-like crystals can collect in your joints. The crystals hurt the tissues of the joint, causing inflammation, swelling, and pain.
Colchicine works by blocking your white blood cells from getting to the joints where you’re having gout symptoms. This stops your joints from swelling up too much and helps make your gout less painful.
What is Colchicine used for?
Colchicine is used to treat Gout, which is a form of inflammatory arthritis that causes sudden, extremely painful inflammation, usually in just one joint, most commonly the big toe. Gout is caused by a build of uric acid, consumed through your diet, inside the body that then builds up and crystallizes inside the joints.
Symptoms of Gout include:
- Sudden, intense joint pain
- Swelling
- Redness
- Heat
If you are unsure if you are suffering from Gout you should see a doctor who will be able to offer an appropriate diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
Colchicine Dosage
A treatment course of Colchicine is a maximum of 6mg (12 tablets) over 3 to 6 days. It's important to stick to your prescribed Colchicine dose. Taking even a little bit more can be very serious.
How quickly does Colchicine work?
Colchicine is an incredibly quick treatment option for easing pain and discomfort caused by gout. It begins to break down the uric acid in your body within 30 minutes - 2 hours and most people will feel noticeable relief from their condition within 1 - 2 days.
Alternatives to Colchicine
Several other medicines can be used to treat an acute flare up of gout. This includes Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen. On some occasions, patients are prescribed a short course of corticosteroid tablets like prednisolone.
If you experience frequent gout attacks, speak with your doctor about prevention measures such as Allopurinol.
